## Commentary

This fragment of a precious Florentine velvet and gold foil textile attests to the variety of silk, wool, and in general of fine textile production carried on in Florence since the Middle Ages, for which the city was famous throughout the entire world then known. This portion of red cut velvet over gold cloth is decorated with the so-called pomegranate design, one of the fundamental textile patterns used in Florence during the fifteenth century. The fragment itself is formed of three pieces sewn together and bordered to form an altar frontal.
