## Commentary

The works of Giacomo Piazzetta, an excellent sculptor of wood and stone, reflect at the end of the seventeenth century a manner that has features in common with those of Heinrich Meyring, by whom he was influenced. The picture shows one of the eight altar frontals in the Rosary Chapel of Santi Giovanni e Paolo with the scene The Flight into Egypt. It shows a compositional development in which accents of naturalism sit alongside more elegant notes and rhythms with formal and narrative cadences that suggest the style of Antonio Molinari. Piazzetta and Molinari must have known each other, given that Piazzetta's son, Giambattista, had already started his apprenticeship with Molinari around 1695.
