## Commentary

This is Novelli&#39;s last known work and is suffused with a subtle but undeniable sense of melancholy, a feeling of misgiving which makes us feel each character is in solitude and unable to communicate with the others. Here Pietro Novelli has captured the lyrical intuition to be found in Caravaggio&#39;s Sicilian work and made it his own.
