## Commentary

King-Stadholder Willem III, one of the chief patrons at the end of the 17th century, commissioned from Gérard de Lairesse mythological love stories for the bedroom in his Soestdijk hunting lodge. Odysseus and Calypso belonged to this group of paintings.
