## Commentary

This signed and dated painting depicts Major Hannay&#39;s favourite liver and white Welsh springer spaniel &#39;Countess&#39; in a wooded landscape. Thomas Gooch was a prolific painter of sporting paintings, which included equestrian and canine portraits, hunting and shooting paintings and racing subjects.
