# Luke Paints the Icon of the Mother of God Hodegetria [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [UNKNOWN ICON PAINTER, Russian]() - Date: 1401-1450 - Technique: Egg tempera on wood, 26 x 18 cm ## Commentary According to the legend, the Evangelist Luke painted Christ and His Mother with his own hands and their images were kept in Rome and Jerusalem. From the 11th century the icon of the Mother of God Hodegetria, venerated in the Hodegon monastery in Constantinople, which shows her carrying the child facing forwards on her left arm while pointing towards Him with her right hand, was referred to as St Luke's own work.
