# Interior view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, French]() - Date: 1051-1100 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary In the west of the Frankish empire, the region between the Loire and the Dordogne, two main group of Romanesque buildings can be distinguished: the hall churches and the domed churches. The abbey church at Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe appears to be the oldest hall church in the Poitou region, with the choir and transept dating back to between 1060 and 1085 and the nave to between 1095 and 1115. In the interior the groin-vaulted side aisles are just as wide and almost as high as the central nave with its high colonnades spanned by a barrel vault. This barrel vault is smooth as it extends from the east over the first six bays. The photo shows a view through the columned nave into the old choir ambulatory.
