## Commentary

This statue of fame sounding a trumpet was commissioned on September 3, 1597, to crown the funerary monument of Jean-Louis de La Vallette, Duc d'Epernon and governor of Gascony, and Marguerite de Foix-Candale, in the church of Saint-Blaise de Cadillac \(Gironde\). It was installed on top of a canopied funerary monument modelled on the great royal tombs of Saint-Denis and the monument to Anne de Montmorency. The wings of Fame were re-sculpted in bronze by Chinard around 1805. The most important French sculptors of the period were Pierre Biard and Matthieu Jacquet. Biard's Fame shows him to have been a robust if somewhat insensitive follower of Giambologna.
