## Commentary

Bust of Admiral Michiel Adriaensz. de Ruyter 1677 Terracotta, colour-washed, height 37 cm Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter \(1607-1676\) is one of the most famous admirals in Dutch history. De Ruyter is most famous for his role in the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the 17th century. The sculptor Rombout Verhulst was commissioned by the States General to create a tomb for De Ruyter. Verhulst probably made this clay head as a detailed study for the tomb.
