## Commentary

Hercules and the Horses of Diomedes c. 1640 Oil on canvas Castle Museum and Art Gallery, Nottingham Charles Le Brun was an artist of great natural talent. He was first trained under Perrier and Vouet, and while still in the studio of the latter produced the painting of which reveals a vigour of design and handling astonishing so young an artist.
