# Torsos of five nude men in action \(recto\) [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [RAFFAELLO Sanzio]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Pen and brown ink, 269 x 195 mm ## Commentary Raphael took his inspiration for the torsos of five nude men in action from Michelangelo's cartoon for the <a onclick="return OpenOther\('/html/m/michelan/4drawing/02/01cascin.html'\)" href="/html/m/michelan/4drawing/02/01cascin.html">Battle of Cascina.</a> Raphael clearly used the Cascina nudes as his cue, but adapted the figures to his own idiom. The muscles of the torsos are well-defined, yet he seems more interested in experimenting with the poses than studying the play of light over the contours of the bodies.
