## Commentary

The plaster figure of the 'Lucrecia moribunda' dates from 1804, though it was 30 years later that the artist translated it into marble. According to legend, St. Lucretia of Mérida was converted from Islam to Christianity and subsequently persecuted by the Moors, until finally being martyred in 859.
