## Commentary

Pratovecchio Altarpiece: Virgin and St John the Evangelist c. 1450 Tempera on wood, 57 x 28 cm \(each\) National Gallery, London The picture shows the panels from the pinnacle of the Pratovecchio Altarpiece. For the rhetorical poses of the Virgin and St John, &lt;A onclick=&#34;return OpenOther\(&#39;/html/d/donatell/2\_mature/sacristy/1sacri03.html&#39;\)&#34; HREF=&#34;/html/d/donatell/2\_mature/sacristy/1sacri03.html&#34;&gt;Donatello&#39;s bronze doors&lt;/A&gt; for the Old Sacristy in San Lorenzo provided the Master of Pratovecchio with the models. In certain respects, these figures are the altarpiece&#39;s most extraordinary figures, and they look ahead to the &lt;A onclick=&#34;return OpenOther\(&#39;/html/p/pollaiol/antonio/tobias.html&#39;\)&#34; HREF=&#34;/html/p/pollaiol/antonio/tobias.html&#34;&gt;work of Pollaiuolo.&lt;/A&gt;
