## Commentary

The sitter of the portrait, Thomas Osborne, 1st Duke of Leeds \(1631-1712\), was a British statesman. The painting indicates the high status of the Knights of the Garter by the fact that Osborne chose to be depicted in his Garter robes decades after his appointment to the Order. The painting was signed by Johann Kerseboom, and Jan van der Vaardt.
