## Commentary

This still-life is one of the masterpieces of the Master of the Hartford Still-life, the conventional name art historians have assigned to an anonymous still-life specialist active in Rome at the turn of the seventeenth century and part of Giuseppe Cesari&#39;s entourage, in close contact with the young Caravaggio. This painting and &lt;a onclick=&#34;return OpenOther\(&#39;/html/c/caravagg/06/35emmau.html&#39;\)&#34; href=&#34;/html/c/caravagg/06/35emmau.html&#34;&gt;Caravaggio&#39;s Supper at Emmaus&lt;/a&gt; at the National Gallery in London have several elements in common: the vantage point is elevated and set back, the items on the table are shown in perspective, and there is a table cover with stylised geometric motifs, overlaid by a white table cloth.
