## Commentary

Varin worked chiefly in Beauvais and Paris. It has always been assumed that his work for the Church of the Grand Andely must have influenced the young Nicolas Poussin, who was born at Les Andelys. Varin never departed from his out-of-date but powerful Mannerist style.
