# Fishermen by Moonlight [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [AVERCAMP, Hendrick]() - Date: 1601-1650 - Technique: Pen and brush, 144 x 195 mm ## Commentary A moonlit river, with fishermen working away busily in their boats, and a town silhouetted on the bank. Further down we can see ships being repaired; they have been careened so that their hulls can be burnt clean. The fiery glow to the right indicates more work going on. The sense of night-time is conveyed with great skill. Avercamp produced a large number of elaborate drawings such as this, which were often framed as small paintings.
