# Capital of a column [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MEDIEVAL SCULPTOR, French]() - Date: 1101-1150 - Technique: Stone ## Commentary The Cluny monastery church, seat of the Benedictine Order, was begun in 1088 and completed in the second decade of the twelfth century. Until the sixteenth century it was the largest church of Western Christianity. The church, destroyed during the french Revolution, was richly decorated with sculptural ornaments.
