## Commentary

Duke Alessandro de&#39; Medici&#39;s image on this medal relates to &lt;a onclick=&#34;return OpenOther\(&#39;/html/p/pontormo/drawings/2/052medic.html&#39;\)&#34; href=&#34;/html/p/pontormo/drawings/2/052medic.html&#34;&gt;Pontormo&#39;s portrait drawing&lt;/a&gt; in the Biblioteca Marucelliana, Florence, indicating that the artist probably provided the medalist with the likeness. Giorgio Vasari used the same profile in his &lt;a onclick=&#34;return OpenOther\(&#39;/html/v/vasari/1/02medicx.html&#39;\)&#34; href=&#34;/html/v/vasari/1/02medicx.html&#34;&gt;large-scale portrait&lt;/a&gt; of the duke painted in the same year. On the reverse of the medal, the figure of Peace holds a cornucopia and an olive branch and sets fire to a stack of arms.
