## Commentary

Jean-Baptiste Colbert \(1619-1683\), as &#39;Surintendant des Batiments&#39; commissioned plans from several French and foreign architects to construct the great front facing St Germain l&#39;Auxerrois which was to close the Louvre on the east. Marot&#39;s engraving shows Gian Lorenzo Bernini&#39;s third scheme from 1665.
