## Commentary

Four Canons with Sts Augustine and Jerome, with the Visitation c. 1500 Oil on panel, 88 x 105 cm Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam In the foreground, the canons are kneeling by an open grave with a skeleton inside. In the middleground are the Virgin and Elizabeth, seated on a bench in a garden. The background depicts a cloister-garth, with the church on the left and the refectory on the right. The garth is populated by angels.
