## Commentary

Portrait of Jacob Ziegler c. 1540 Oil on wood, 58,5 x 44 cm Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna Huber was a German painter, draughtsman and woodcut artist, who, after Altdorfer, was the most important member of the Danube school. He worked in Regensburg and Passau. Few paintings by him are known and it is in woodcuts and drawings that his lyrical approach to landscape can best be seen. The sitter of this portrait, Jacob Ziegler, was a scholar who lived a wandering life in Europe. In his old age he lived in the house of the Bishop of Passau. This portrait was executed here when he was about seventy years old.
