## Commentary

The Discovery of the Child Erichthonius \(detail\) c. 1615 Oil on canvas Liechtenstein Museum, Vienna But one of three daughters of Cecrops, overcome by curiosity, opened the basket and discovered that the child had a serpent&#39;s tail for legs \(or that a serpent lay beside it\).
