## Commentary

This engraving was made after a &lt;a onclick=&#34;return OpenOther\(&#39;/html/g/grunewal/1/02crucif.html&#39;\)&#34; href=&#34;/html/g/grunewal/1/02crucif.html&#34;&gt;painting by Matthias Grünewald.&lt;/a&gt; Sadeler&#39;s print was commissioned specifically as a reproduction. Comparison of Grünewald&#39;s painting with the engraving reveals adjustments to contemporary taste and style \(the drapery, for example, has taken on volume, rhythm, and more elaborate folds\).
