## Commentary

In Umbria, there stands a varied series of civic palaces in which a more or less open and extensive ground-floor loggia forms the basis for a building of at least three storeys, often furnished with a fine external staircase, yet in many cases still retaining the clear marks of castle ancestry. At Todi three thirteenth-century civic palaces \(and a substantially thirteenth-century cathedral\) are grouped about a single square, the Piazza del Popolo, namely the Palazzo del Popolo, the Palazzo del Capitano, and the Palazzo dei Priori. The much restored Palazzo del Popolo was begun in 1213, heightened by one storey in 1228-33, and completed by 1267. The subsequently linked, and also highly restored Palazzo del Capitano dates from the 1290s. The wider but still rounded arches and more massive piers of the ground-level loggia are boldly contrasted with the Gothic 'trifore' \(mullioned windows with three lights\). The Palazzo dei Priori, located in the southern side of the Piazza, was begun in 1293 and later enlarged as seat of the priors. It is not so much in the detail or the general structure of the individual buildings as in their subtle grouping that the supreme achievement of the medieval architects of Todi lies. The photo shows the view of the Piazza del Popolo towards the Palazzo dei Priori.
