## Commentary

Between 1646 and 1651 Martino Longhi the Younger built the church of SS. Vincenzo ed Anastasio for Cardinal Mazarin on Piazza di Trevi. The site for the church opened diagonally onto the square. This enabled Longhi to create a unique and successful solution for the façade: three free-standing columns set close together on each side of the central axis, with a further set of columns arranged in the same manner on the upper floor.
