## Commentary

In this trompe-l&#39;oeil painting the small portrait, nailed onto the back wall of the studio, is a self-portrait. The reference to himself is substantiated by the note on the shelf below the portrait, addressed to &#34;Royal Portrait Painter Gijsbrechts in Copenhagen.&#34;
