## Commentary

The saints elegant and even heroic pose contrasts with the cruelty of his martyrdom. The piece is made up through the brilliant interplay of angular counter-movements. The unusual positioning of the legs, as if the saint were dancing, is believed to have been borrowed from an engraving. The sculpture is attributed to the German Master Arnt, who was active around 1480 in Kalkar.
