## Commentary

The East Gate, also known as St Catherine's Gate was the oldest of all the medieval entranceways to Delft. It remains largely intact today. The drawing bears an old inscription lower right: W. Buyten weech, referring to Willem Buytewech who drew a few comparable cityscapes. However, the style of the drawing does not support the identification. Presently it is thought that the drawing is the work of Jan van de Velde the Younger, the cousin of Buytewech.
