## Commentary

Joos van Wassenhove was one of the first in a long line of Netherlandish painters to make Italy his adopted land, and his last works represent an impressive blending of Northern skill in the execution of detail and colour in the oil medium and the scale and grandeur of Italian monumental mural decoration. The Allegory of Music is part of a series on the seven liberal arts.. As is customary, each of the panels included an enthroned woman to personify a corresponding liberal art.
