# Four Latin Fathers of the Church and Saints \(verso\) [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [BRAMER, Leonaert]() - Date: 1601-1650 - Technique: Brush and gray ink, brush and watercolour, 531 x 406 mm ## Commentary On this sheet Bramer sketched two studies for ceiling paintings in the tradition of Correggio. On the recto fifteen angel sing and play musical instruments and five putti surround a cloud. The composition on the verso is more complicated. In the centre, three bands of angels recede toward a distant burst of heavenly light. The lower level of clouds is occupied by elderly men with large books who must be the four Latin fathers of the Church: Ambrose, Augustine, Gregory, and Jerome, who is identified by a lion.
