# Left reliefs on the portal: 1 Creation of Adam [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [QUERCIA, Jacopo della]() - Date: 1401-1450 - Technique: Istrian stone, 82 x 68 cm ## Commentary The five scenes on the left lateral support of the main portal of San Petronio are, from top to bottom, the \(i\) Creation of Adam, \(ii\) Creation of Eve, \(iii\) Original Sin, \(iv\) Expulsion from Paradise and \(v\) Work of the Ancestors. The picture shows the relief of Creation of Adam. In this relief, the figural arrangement is the exact reverse of the scene from the Fonte Gaia. Jacopo has even retained the unusual triangular halo of God the Father. The arrangement of the figures, however, seems less tightly compressed. The body of Adam is also more idealized than the earlier work, but is still in Jacopo's typical style - thick-necked, heavy-limbed and with an exaggerated musculature that gives little hint of the skeletal structure underneath.
