# Gradual from St. Katharinenthal [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MINIATURIST, Swiss]() - Date: 1301-1350 - Technique: Manuscript \(Ms. LM 26117\) ## Commentary Gradual from St. Katharinenthal c. 1312 Manuscript \(Ms. LM 26117\) Schweizerisches Landesmuseum, Zurich The Gradual is a liturgical book which contained the chants to be sung by the monastic community in daily service. The present work is one of the loveliest of illuminated Gothic choir books. The upper miniature on folio 190v shows the beheading of St John. Beneath the arcade on the right John is beheaded by the executioner; on the left Salome is carrying his head to Herod and Herodias.
