## Commentary

The painting was commissioned by the dean of the Toledo Cathedral, Diego de Castilla, to hang in the vestry there. Completed in 1579, it is one of the finest and most important paintings of El Greco&#39;s career. It was moved about 1612 from the vestry into the re-modelled sacristy, and in the 1790s was inserted into a new frame, in which it can be seen today.
