# Interior view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, English]() - Date: 1301-1350 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary At the beginning of the 14th century, the monks of Ely decided to renew their church in the new Gothic style. They started it in 1321 with the Lady Chapel to the north of the choir. It was completed around 1345 and consecrated in 1353. Although it has a simple box-like shape, it outdoes everything which had gone before in complexity: the interior architectural forms, ornamentation, sculpture are all subtly interconnected. Everything was once gilded or painted in bright colours. In its original condition, the Lady Chapel at Ely must have been a stunning treasure house, a high point of the Decorated Style.
