## Commentary

Venus and Amor Mourning the Death of Adonis c. 1655 Oil on canvas, 99 x 206 cm Frans Halsmuseum, Haarlem The conception and detail of this painting were based on a print of 1606 by Antonio Tempesta. The unusual proportions of the canvas \(its width is more than double its height\) create a markedly horizontal effect. Since the painting was originally executed as an overmantel the format may have been chosen to suit its location.
