## Commentary

Petrarch: Canzoniere and Trionfi 1470 Incunable \(Inc. Ven. 546\) Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Venice This incunable was printed in 1470 by Wendelin of Speyer, the brother of Johann of Speyer who introduced printing to Venice with his edition of the works of Cicero, printed there in 1469. The brothers came from Speyer in Germany and opened the first printing-house in Venice in 1468 after Johann had obtained a privilege for printing with movable type from the Venetian Signoria. In 1470 Johann died and Wendelin took over the business. The opening page of the Canzoniere on folio 9 is decorated with rich and ample borders of spiraling penwork decorated with leaves, flowers, fruit and animals. In the lower border Petrarch and Laura appear seated beside a tree on a branch of which hangs the coat of arms of the Priuli family of Venice. The decoration is attributed to Girolamo da Cremona, one of the illuminators who collaborated on the decoration of the Bible of Borso d'Este. His activity is documented in Padua, Siena and Florence, but his finest work is to be found in the decoration of several incunables printed in Venice.
