## Commentary

Grounds of a Renaissance Palace c. 1540 Oil on panel, 51 x 68 cm Private collection The panel depicts the grounds of a Renaissance palace with episodes from the story of David and Bathsheba, an extensive landscape with mountains and a harbour beyond. In this composition, the artist combines architectural beauty with the purest Flemish landscape tradition. The painting is one of a series of similarly constructed paintings, executed in Flanders by a group of artists \(among them Herri Met de Bles\) between 1530 and 1560. All of the versions are based on the same scene.
