## Commentary

Angels supporting coat of arms c. 1615 Stucco Chapel of the Trinité, Fontainebleau The chapel of the Trinité at Fontainebleau provides a good example of the interior decoration of the period. The main ornamentation of the ceiling dates from the reign of Henry IV, and consists of a combination of stucco frames and painted panels in the manner to be seen in all parts of the palace. Over the altar and the royal gallery, however, Marie de&#39; Medici added two big stucco groups of angels supporting her coat of arms in the new style which was to be current in France during the period c. 1615-25. Instead of curving over like pieces of cut leather, the forms are now more like a shell or even the lobe of an ear. This form of decoration was widely used during the regency of Marie de&#39; Medici, in stone or wood work.
