# The Oberried Altarpiece \(right wing\) [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [HOLBEIN, Hans the Younger]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Tempera on wood, 230 x 110 cm ## Commentary The altarpiece was donated to the Carthusian Monastery at Kleinbasel by senator Hans Oberried who left Freiburg for Basel but returned after the Reformation. The altarpiece was partially destroyed during the iconoclasm. The surviving two wings were transferred to the Freiburg Cathedral in 1529. The composition of the altarpiece cannot be reconstructed, however, from stylistic reasons it is assumed by some scholars that the famous Dead Christ in Basel served as predella painting.
