# Tomb of Pope Innocent VIII [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [POLLAIUOLO brothers]() - Date: 1451-1500 - Technique: Gilded bronze, height 549 cm ## Commentary Innocent VIII's tomb was placed against a wall but, exceptionally for its date, it incorporated two statues of the Pope: one showing him recumbent in death, and the other enthroned and vividly triumphant. Originally, the effigy of the seated Pope, holding aloft the relic of the head of Longinus's lance with a powerfully theatrical gesture, was placed beneath the recumbent effigy.
