## Commentary

Barthel Beham was Dürer&#39;s most talented successor. His Portrait of Duke Ludwig X of Bavaria is distinguished by its exceptional quality: the fur and hair are executed with meticulous precision, as are the highlights on his forehead and the lines of his face. Noteworthy is the depiction of Ludwig&#39;s left hand resting on a parapet: it reaches out of the picture frame towards the viewer.
