## Commentary

Round Medallion Featuring Combats c. 1550 Painted enamel on copper, gold, diameter 40 cm, thickness 8 cm Musée du Louvre, Paris This is an example of painted enamel grisaille in which the work on the white enamel before firing allows to render volumes. The counter-enamel is colourless glass called flux. It is probably a decorative item meant to be mounted in paneling. The enameller copied the print of the Cutlass Battle by Marco Dente, a pupil of Marcantonio Raimondi, after Giulio Romano.
