## Commentary

The Master of the Straus Madonna was a name given to an anonymous latter 14th century artist by Richard Offner. He invented the pseudonym after having considered a panel depicting a Madonna, which was at one time in the Percy S. Straus collection in New York, and then in 1933 on stylistic grounds he grouped 23 works around this undocumented figure. This anonymous artist can be seen as a stylistic precursor of Masolino who started working at the beginning of the 15th century.
