## Commentary

The painting shows a palace interior, a popular meeting place with many figures. A succession of vaulted ceilings, interspersed with square open spaces leads the eye into the recesses of the building. The geometrical pattern of the tiled floor also helps create a realistic three-dimensional impression, while the spatial quality of the painting is emphasised by the glimpse into the distance on the right. The staffage was made by Anthonie Palamedesz.
