# View of the nave, looking east [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ROMANESQUE PAINTER, Italian]() - Date: 1051-1100 - Technique: Fresco ## Commentary The Sant'Angelo in Formis, near Capua, is a nearly completely intact church building from the early Middle Ages whose entire interior is decorated with frescoes. This fresco ensemble, the most extensive and artistically important to have survived from the second half of the eleventh century in Italy, demonstrates the extent to which the early Christian decorative scheme known from San Paolo fuori le Mura in Rome continued to be valid into the High Middle Ages.
