# Edward, Prince of Wales [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [HOLBEIN, Hans the Younger]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Oil and gold on oak panel, 28 x 23 cm ## Commentary Edward, Prince of Wales c. 1545 Oil and gold on oak panel, 28 x 23 cm Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York The inscription on the background shows the age \(6\) of the sitter, the son of Henry VIII, the future King Edward VI. For a long time, it was thought that the painting is the artist's last work, completed just prior the prince's birthday in 1543. However, based in part on new technical evidence, the portrait was rejected as autograph.
