## Commentary

Urbino Bible 1476-78 Manuscript \(Ms. Urb. lat. 1, 2, 2 volumes\), 596 x 442 mm Biblioteca Apostolica, Vatican This Bible was commissioned by Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino \(reigned 1474-1482\), who compiled an extensive library which in its heyday boasted 1.000 volumes. For this purpose he ordered luxurious and lavishly decorated codices that were illustrated in the then modern style of the early Renaissance and dedicated to both scientific and practical themes, some also to religious subjects. The illustrations in the Bible were made by several illuminators in the Florentine workshop under the direction of Francesco di Antonio del Chierico. The text of St Jerome's prologue appears on the ornamental title page \(folio 1v\) of the Montefeltro Bible. It is written in the so-called monumental Italian humanist script that was derived from the late classical epigraphic letters of the Capitalis script. This text block is framed with a lavishly decorated figural border as well as golden patterns on a deep blue ground using a typical decorative programme of the Renaissance. It is thought that Francesco Rosselli, a pupil of Francesco di Antonio del Chierico, is the author of the decoration on the title page.
