## Commentary

Madonna, Child and Saints c. 1430 Marble, height 130 cm Mascoli Chapel, Basilica di San Marco, Venice The Master derives his name from a marble altarpiece and antependium in the Mascoli Chapel, San Marco. The altar has also been given to Giovanni Bon, father of Bartolomeo. The Gothic triptych is the stone equivalent of a form popular in painting. Although each figure stands in a Renaissance niche within the ornate frame, they appear to interact, hesitantly suggesting the unified, rectangular "sacra conversazione" altarpiece developing in Florence. The represented saints are Mark and James.
