# Eliezer and Rebecca [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [BRAY, Salomon de]() - Date: 1601-1650 - Technique: Pen in brown, brush, grey wash, 89 x 145 mm ## Commentary Salamon de Bray's Eliezer and Rebecca is related to two, precisely dated preparatory drawings from November 1659. The first sketch of 9 November 1559 shows Rebecca and Eliezer standing at a well on the slope of a mountain, as we see them in the final painting. However, the positions of the camels and the landscape are reversed as compared with the painting. The second, completed nine days after the first, bears an even closer resemblance to the painting. The composition is identical to that of the painting, with the landscape on the left and the camels on the right.
